Company Retreats in the Azores & Madeira

Atlantic islands for the retreat your team will still talk about years later.

For a retreat that feels genuinely once-in-a-while, it's hard to beat an Atlantic island. Portugal has two, and they're very different. Madeira is subtropical, mild all year, and reachable on direct flights from much of Europe, so it's easy island access without a long haul. The Azores are wilder and more dramatic, with volcanic craters, hot springs, and whales offshore, and they feel like the edge of the world while staying firmly in Europe. Both are hidden gems for a company retreat, and both reward teams that come to slow down. We plan island company retreats here for groups of 8 to 50.

Why host your company retreat on an island?

    01

    A retreat people never forget

Volcanic craters, hot springs, cliffs that drop into the Atlantic, laurel forest and whales offshore. The scenery does the heavy lifting, so an island makes a milestone trip feel like one with almost no programming required.

    02

    Genuine hidden gems

Most teams have never considered the Azores or Madeira for a retreat, and that's exactly the appeal. They're firmly in Europe and easy to operate in, yet still feel like somewhere you've been let in on.

    03

    Wellness and calm by default

Thermal pools in Furnas, levada walks through Madeira's forests, ocean everywhere you look. The pace and the nature make these natural settings for a wellness reset or a slower, restorative offsite.

    04

    More accessible than you'd expect

Madeira flies direct from the UK, Germany, France and much of Europe, so for a European team it can be no harder to reach than the mainland. The Azores add year-round nonstop flights from the US and Canada, which makes them a rare mid-Atlantic meeting point for transatlantic teams.

    Madeira or the Azores?

Two very different island retreats. Madeira for easy access and year-round mildness; the Azores for raw, dramatic nature. Here's how to choose.

Madeira, Subtropical, mild all year, levada trails, Funchal as a base

    Madeira (FNC)

Direct from many EU cities · 1h 40 from Lisbon

Vibe: Subtropical, mild all year, levada trails, Funchal as a base

Best for: 10 to 50 people, easy-access island retreats, wellness, year-round

São Miguel, Azores, Volcanic craters, hot springs, crater lakes, dramatic and green

    São Miguel, Azores (PDL)

~2h 15 from Lisbon · direct from the US and parts of Europe

Vibe: Volcanic craters, hot springs, crater lakes, dramatic and green

Best for: 10 to 40 people, once-in-a-while incentive trips, nature resets

    Who flies direct to Madeira?

Madeira's accessibility is its quiet advantage. Funchal (FNC) is served by around 30 airlines from across Europe, so for many teams it's no harder to reach than the mainland. A snapshot of common direct routes:

    United Kingdom

London, Manchester, Bristol and more (Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair, BA)

    Germany

Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf (Condor, Lufthansa, Eurowings)

    France & Benelux

Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels (Transavia, TAP, TUI)

    Nordics & Switzerland

    Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Zurich, Basel

    Portugal (mainland)

Lisbon and Porto, several times daily

    United States

New York (Newark), seasonal summer nonstop with United

Routes and frequencies vary by season and airline, so we confirm the best options for your team's home cities when we plan.

Who flies direct to the Azores?

This is the Azores' surprise: thanks to a large Azorean diaspora, São Miguel (PDL) has year-round nonstop flights from North America as well as Europe. That makes it a genuine mid-Atlantic meeting point for a transatlantic team. A snapshot of common direct routes:

    United States

Boston and New York (JFK) year-round with Azores Airlines; Newark (seasonal) with United

    Canada

Toronto and Montreal with Azores Airlines, WestJet and Air Canada

    United Kingdom & France

London (Heathrow) with British Airways; Paris with Azores Airlines

    Germany & Switzerland

Frankfurt (Azores Airlines, Lufthansa), Düsseldorf, Zurich

    Netherlands & Spain

    Amsterdam (Transavia), Barcelona and Madrid

    Portugal (mainland)

Lisbon, Porto and Funchal, daily with Azores Airlines and TAP

Many European routes are summer-only, while the North American and mainland Portugal flights run year-round. We confirm the current schedule for your team's home cities when we plan.

How much does a 3-day island retreat cost?

All-inclusive on-the-ground ranges covering accommodation, meals, transfers, activities, meeting space, and our planning fee. International flights are extra and matter more here than anywhere.

    per person · 3 days

Boutique hotel or rural quinta, hands-on local guides, relaxed island pace. Excludes flights.

    High-end

    €2,400–€3,800+
    per person · 3 days

The biggest variable is flights: getting a whole team to an island costs more than a short transfer from Lisbon, which is why islands suit milestone and reward-led retreats. When is the best time of year?

Madeira works almost any time, since it's famously mild all year, with late spring to autumn the most reliable for sun. The Azores are best from June to September, when the weather is warmest and calmest and whale watching peaks.

    June – September

Peak for both islands: warmest, driest, calmest seas, and prime whale-watching in the Azores. The best window for an island retreat.

    April–May / October

Shoulder season: pleasant, quieter, and better value. Madeira is reliably mild, while the Azores are greener and a little more changeable.

    November – March

Madeira stays mild and is a real winter-sun option for Europe. The Azores are wetter and windier, so we'd plan with flexibility and an indoor-friendly agenda.

    Frequently asked questions

They're different trips. Madeira is subtropical, mild all year, easy to reach on direct European flights, and great for levada walks, Funchal as a lively base, and a comfortable year-round retreat. The Azores, where we usually base on São Miguel, are wilder and more dramatic, with volcanic craters, hot springs and whale watching, and they carry a bigger sense of adventure. A useful tie-breaker is where your team flies from: Madeira is simplest for a European group, while the Azores have direct flights from the US and Canada as well as Europe. We help you pick based on that and on what the retreat is for.

We'd generally advise against it. The Azores and Madeira are far apart with no quick hop between them, so combining the two burns most of a retreat on travel. Pick one, do it properly, and save the other for next time.

Madeira (FNC) has direct flights from the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands and much of Europe, plus frequent 1h 40 hops from Lisbon and Porto, and a seasonal summer nonstop from New York (Newark) with United. São Miguel in the Azores (PDL) is about 2h 15 from Lisbon and has year-round nonstop flights from Boston and New York (JFK) with Azores Airlines, seasonal service from Newark with United, and routes from Toronto, Montreal and several European cities. We design the agenda around everyone's arrival so the first day still works even with staggered flights.

The on-the-ground cost is broadly in line with mainland Portugal, sometimes a little higher for premium resorts. The real difference is flights, since getting a whole team to an island costs more than a short transfer from Lisbon, and it's worth budgeting for honestly. That's why islands suit reward-led, milestone, or once-in-a-while retreats more than frequent quarterly offsites.

We plan island retreats from 8 up to roughly 50 people. Both islands have good hotels and venues at this scale. Much beyond 50 and the logistics and flights get harder, so we'd talk through whether the mainland is a better fit.

Madeira is famously mild all year and works in every season, with late spring to autumn the most reliable for sun. The Azores are best from June to September for the warmest, calmest weather and the peak of whale-watching season. The islands are green and changeable year-round, so we plan with some weather flexibility built in.
